#1  Blue 55

 - From an article in the Seattle PI:  Blue 55 was formed when three musicians from very diverse backgrounds--a business owner, a mechanic, and a bricklayer--got together. Roger the bass player and Adrian the drummer go back a long way. Blue 55 was born in the fall of 2000 when Glen the guitarist came on the scene. Roger and Adrian should have known they were in for trouble when Glen asked them to pay to play at his wife's surprise birthday party on a boat cruise a few months later. In the beginning it was just talk of a wild and crazy dream to take the money and run, as in let's get some gigs and move on like the Blues Brothers. Glen started to book some initial dates and the dream took off from there. They've been playing in the greater Seattle area fairly steadily since then, everything from Robert Johnson to Elvis Presley and Otis Redding, as well as original numbers. Blue 55 is derived from Glen's rickety ol' blue '55 GMC pickup that they use to haul their band gear.

So, If you're looking for some Roadhouse Blues-based rock, then this is the place!

Here it is, another Thursday nite and the Kitchen Wench is having fun again. She's rolling up some Chicken Enchiladas for tonights dinner,
and it comes with the usual sides, plus dessert...
another fine dinner for a reasonable price, while you check out the music!

#2  The Joe Barton Trio

Joe Barton is currently a musician who's based in Golden Colorado, but is attempting to relocate in the Seattle area. He has been coming to the Seattle area on a semi-regular basis for some time now, and has been showing up at various jams and getting to know the Blues community and some of it's players. He was advised by more than one of his local contacts to connect with me and see about getting a gig, which he did. I checked into his Myspace page and was suitably impressed with the sound of his Trio. I put him on my email list. He was in town at the time of the Norm Bellas Benefit at SBE and showed up to see what was going on, and to introduce himself to me. He was invited to play some tunes with the SBE regulars. He jumped right in and I was able to see him live. Booking him for Slammin' Bay was no mistake! I think that you will enjoy his show at the club.
He has a unique sound and different style.
Come on down and see his Trio for yourself, and welcome another Bluesman to the community! The more the merrier!...or something like that.

#3  Benefit for Mauva Bell
Star Drums & Lady Keys will host a benefit  on Sunday, July 25 (3P-6P), at the Salmon Bay Eagles for premier singer and entertainer, Mauva Bell, who passed away May 20 in New Orleans of pancreatic cancer; she was only 47 years young. After spending 3 months in the hospital with no medical insurance, donations are requested to help her family with the medical bills.
Mauva blew into the Seattle music scene from her New Orleans hometown in 1995. At that time she had not sung professionally, but she had the gifts of a beautiful voice and the ability to make you feel deeply whatever she was singing, and she chose to develop those gifts here in our city. For five wonderful years she played exciting gigs at many Seattle venues, with many of the blues musicians who still share our lives. Anyone who was at those gigs will smile to remember her tight dresses, high heel shoes ("the higher, the better"), and her love for a celebration. She left us with her first CD, "38 Carat Gold", recorded in Seattle in 1999. In 2000 she and her new husband James left Seattle, went on tour in Italy, and then settled back in New Orleans, eventually buying their first home, which was sadly destroyed in Hurricane Katrina. Her career has taken her from Seattle to Caribbean cruise ships, the New Orleans French Quarter, and most recently, to clubs and festivals in the Natchitoches Parish in Louisiana. Those who know her understand that she packed more life into her years than most people who live to be 90
- by Gail Kurath [aka Lady Keys] who was her piano player for Mauva's first band, "Mauva's Bathtub" , 1997-1999
Here's a video link to see her perform: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6n_4iBW5aL0&feature=related
Her husband, James White, will try to fly up from New Orleans to attend the benefit, and is very appreciative of our musical community coming together to celebrate the life of one of our own.

Mauva's CD's will be auctioned off, and musician's are invited to sit in with Leslie 'Star Drums' Milton and Gael 'Lady Keys' Kurath.
We look forward to welcoming you at the benefit. Thanks to everyone!

ALL THE WAY FROM SPOKANE!

The Fat Tones

http://www.myspace.com/thefattones88

http://www.garageband.com/artist/fattones

Bobby Patterson, Guitar, Vocals

Bob Ehrgott, Bass, Vocals

Zach Cooper, Drums

2009 Inland Empire Blues Society Awards were given to the Fat Tones in the following categories:
Bob Ehrgott Won Best Male Blues Vocalist
"EMGT" album Won the Best New Album
Bobby Patterson Won Best Male Performer

They've played Several Wash Blues Soc Events

Many of the band's songs have the ability to take up residence in your mind, to entertain you when your iPod's batteries die.

The band plays an eclectic mix of catchy original songs in styles ranging from "rock/funk/blues" to "1950's rockabilly" to "smooth jazz." Guitarist [and chief vocalist] Bobby Patterson, the band's charismatic front man, plays this mix of musical styles with passion, creativity, and ease.

Tim Maher, Washington Blues Society CD Review, 2009

From a Sept Bluesletter article about Mt Baker Festival '08

When I asked some people who their favorite band was, a number of them didn't hesitate to say it was THE FAT TONES. They had a huge following wearing their T-shirts. Judging by the dancing in front of the stage, I already knew that some people were going to mention them when I asked them who their favorite band was. I was impressed enough to buy one of their CDs and I only budgeted myself to buy 2 CDs there. Their harmonies are amazing, Bobby Patterson's guitar playing is world class and their songs are guaranteed to make you dance! - Robert Horn, WBS Bluesletter article.

The Band's motto [and latest CD title] is:

"EVERYBODY MUST GET TONED!"

Marcia "The Kitchen Wench" left it up to me to decide what she will serve for these guys, and I think of HOT STUFF when I hear them, so I suggested CHILI with Cornbread and dessert! She'll also have some fresh chopped jalapenos on the side. Marcia makes a mean batch, and I know it will give you charred lips, but hey! What's life for anyway?

Teen Music Showcase Presents

Silent Appeal, Unplugged!

Music starts at 8 and goes til midnight

All Ages Event

The July 16th show will again feature Silent Appeal and friends playing mostly acoustic and softer rock arrangements. “The night is really about letting some of the local high school age talent come out and share their music with the older and younger crowds” said Dennis Zyvoloski, who is the club’s Music Coordinator. “We are an all-ages club, and it is great to provide a venue for these kids to get started, and hopefully in turn, inspire some of the younger kids in the audience to pick up an instrument.”

Silent Appeal (http://silent-appeal.com) is a local Seattle teen band whose members have played at other Seattle venues such as The Triple Door, the Crocodile and the Vera Project.
If you've been wondering what teens are up to these days, you might as well come on down
and see what THESE teens have been up to!

Guest Monkeys are a regular feature of Surf Monkeys shows, including the great jazz hornmen Brian Kent and Les Clinkingbeard, and the inimitable

"Harmonica Playboy," Mike Lynch.

Seattle guitarist and singer Chris Stevens as been a favorite of Northwest blues fans for many years.  His intense playing calls the prime years of stellar guitarists like B.B. King, T-Bone Walker and Kenny Burrell to mind.  Preferring to deliver his electric blues lines with a big archtop Gibson, Chris combines scorching blues feeling with technical excellence and constantly surprising musical ideas that cut across genres, including blues, jazz... and surf!

Chris Stevens’ Surf Monkeys always rocks the house - In Style!

Marcia, "The Kitchen Wench" is earning her name this week - she told me that she is having a "mystery meal." But I am positive that does not mean "mystery meat" as when I was in the army. Since it's July, I'm hoping she fires up that BBQ Grill out back!

Now tell me that THIS won't be a party!

If you know Brewer, then you know he knows how to throw a party! Will he sing happy birthday to himself?

I guess you'll have to be there to find out!

Those years of hangin' with Albert Collins, playing guitar and doin' vocals and all the other stuff that goes with touring over the years [decades] since then, has only honed his sound to a razor's edge. Come on down and enjoy the band, buy that brand spankin' new cd, and party hearty!

Rumour has it that he has invited a bunch of his old musical buddys to show up and join in the musical antics, so it's gonna be a heck-of-a good time.

Don't forget that you can park on the top floor of the Swedish Hosp Parking lot as long as the bar is raised...I've never seen it down.

I park there frequently.

Take the elevator to the ground floor. It's only 1/2 a block to walk to the back door of the club from the parking garage...probably a shorter distance than you usually walk when you park on the street.

Paul Green and Straightshot

http://www.paulgreenblues.com/

Straight Shot is a hard-driving blues, R&B, and funk band that will keep you on the dance floor all night, or just as easily, let you just sit back and enjoy the music. The band's repertoire draws from a wide variety of material, from raw Chicago blues the likes of Muddy Waters and Little Walter, to the more contemporary sounds of Robert Cray, Delbert McClinton, and the funky grooves of the Meters and Jr. Walker. Straight Shot is made up of seasoned, award-winning musicians.

In fact, Paul has won so many awards from the Blues Society, that they named the "Best Blues Harmonica" award after him...just to give you an idea of how much respect this guy's got from the members of the WBS.

Even if you saw him perform last night,

this is a "can't miss" band! I never get tired of them...

Dancers love 'em!

Daddy Treetops

and The Howlin' Tomcats!

http://www.myspace.com/daddytreetops

Daddy is one of the most interesting musicians in the Pacific NW!

I guarantee you, that he is like nobody else on the planet. He hangs with a gaggle of musicans, the like of which fit the description of "Howlin' Tomcats"... and we're not talkin' about screechin' but full throat howlin' about life, and all it's twists and turns that you never expect...

and doin' it with a grin! If'n you show up for this event,

you'll have a wail of a good time and be dancin' your little feet off!

Here's how he describes his band.

DADDY TREETOPS & THE HOWLIN' TOMCATS (in various permutations): Edward Smith: Bass(R.I.P.); Paul Laugharne: Drums; Steve "Otis" Meyer: Keyboard; David Hays: Bass; Jim Plano: Drums; Jon Parry: Fiddle; Laurette Langille: Guitar, Bass, & Vocals(R.I.P.); Others come and go through the Treetopian Realm of "Howlin' Tomcatism"

Here's some more stuff I stole off his website

* * * DADDY TREETOPS * * * from ragtime to rock n roll. * * * from solo to orchestral. * * * Born and raised in Seattle, WA. Grew up some more in Bellingham, WA. First inspired by "invasion blues" sounds of the Yardbirds and the Rolling Stones and the folk strains of older sister's acoustic guitar. Soon led to search for real blues by songwriter credits, other friends of similar interest, and archival curiosity. Chess, Yazoo, OJL, Blues Classics, Arhoolie among labels releasing pivotal recordings of brilliant songsters with great names: Elmore James, Lightnin' Hopkins, Charley Patton, Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, Tommy Johnson, Lonnie Johnson (no relations, of course), Buddy Boy Hawkins, Furry Lewis, Bukka White --- the list goes on, people... ...Up in Bellingham, took in some more "country-fied" influences through association with local legendary band Swift Current (see Joe "Hippiebilly" Paquin under "Country" in MySpace.com). Blues + Country = Rock&Roll ... and there ain't nothin wrong with that! ....Daddy Treetops loves all kinds of music and plays with versatility on guitars, basses, pianos, banjos, mandolins, acoustically and electrically. And loves to travel America and beyond... * * * * * * * * * *

I hope to see you there!

The [Almost All New]

Mary McPage Band!

  http://marymcpage.com/

Mary McPage is one of the finest female Blues Singers in the Pacific Northwest. She will blow you away! When Mary opens her mouth to sing, people do a double take. "I had to see where that voice was coming from and I still can't believe it's coming out of you!" Influenced by country, rock, and torch,

McPage knows how to sell a song.

Be it a standard, or one of her original compositions,

this sassy singer creates performances that range from inane to intense.

The band is smokin’, but it’s McPage who lights the fire. With her raw, emotionally charged vocals, she works the crowd into a frenzy. She let’s ‘em know they are alive and that life is good! Mary takes it from kitten to volcano and back again. She delivers the tasty tunes that audiences have come to expect from her.

p.s. Mary won the 2009 Washington Blues Society's "Best of the Blues" award for

Best Performer of the year! She was also nominated for Best Female Vocalist too!

McPage has a brand new band & is proud to introduce them to the good people at the Salmon Bay Eagles...

It's Country Nite already!

The Bouchards!
[Sorry, but I wasn't able to steal a photo from their website, but take my word for it, that it really doesn't matter what they look like...and anyway, you know what Country Dave looks like because he's played the club with his own band,

"The Pickin' Crew" and also with Marc Bristol and "The Oakey Dokes"]

Believe me, you will not be disappointed with this group!

Bring your best dancin' partner, as you wil not want to be lookin' around for someone unattached to dance with, when these guys are layin' down that beat!

http://www.bouchardsmusic.net/

The Bouchards feature

Dennis Tevlin on guitars and vocals,

Bill Preib on guitars and vocals,

Bob Kahr on drums and vocals,

Dave Harmonson on pedal and lap steel guitars,

and Geoff Duncan on bass guitar.

The Bouchards hail from Seattle, WA and have been compared to a wide range of artists including Wilco, Tom Petty, and the Derailers. In their debut release “High Water Line”, The Bouchards sing songs of love, loss and renewal, re-imagining the modern world through the lens of classic Americana.

Here's a review on their cd

The Bouchards - High Water Line

Channeling the ghosts of country’s past, the Bouchards open up High Water Line with “Lonesome Time,” a tune that proves to be one of the finest moments on the album. In true classic-country fashion, the song juxtaposes some of the saddest lyrics you’ll ever hear with brisk, bouncy instrumentation that’s heavy with pedal steel solos. Indeed High Water Line is a fine record. The distant, driving banjo picking that supports “Big Man” is notable, as is the touching, poetic lyricism of “Corinne” and the Tom Petty-style Americana-rock gold of “Motherlode.”
Standout tracks: “Lonesome Time,” “Corinne”

John has been active in the Northwest blues scene since 1974, working with the likes of Albert Collins, Isaac Scott, and JB Hutto. Formed in 2000, The John Stephan Band continues to rock, delivering blues and soul music at it's best.

At first glance you probably asked yourself...

"a crazed robot doing dastardly things to a fair maiden? How's that relate to a blues band?" Well, if your girl [or boy] was being messed with by a cold-hearted robot, Ray-gun or not,

wouldn't you have the blues? Never thought of that, did you!

Nonetheless, The Tom Bourg 9 has played the club on several occasions

and always got a good response from the audience!

 Q. How many vintage guitar collectors does it take to change a light bulb?
A. None. Even though the light bulb is defective, replacing it with a modern bulb would lower the value of the entire ceiling.
