| Thursday 2/16/12 Brian Lee & The Orbiters Check out the NEW CD "Identity Theft" It's a hit! You'll be hearing a lot about this CD from your Blues buddies! Brian Lee & the Orbiters are based in Seattle, Washington, and are one of the premier bands on the Northwest blues scene. Brian fronts the band with melodic vocals and superb guitar, slide guitar, and blues harp. Brian has lead the band since it's formation in 1999, initially called the Blues Orbiters. The "Orbiters" name evokes the concept of the band-- a "broad orbit through the blues universe". Brian's blues influences from an early age include Elmore James, T-Bone Walker, Big and Little Walter, Johnny Watson, Guitar Slim, Peter Green, and later additions such as Jr. Watson, Jimmy Vaughan, Rick Estrin, Gary Smith, etc... Brian has lead the Orbiters to a prominent position in the Northwest blues scene based on their engaging and energetic delivery, top-flight musicianship, and great repertoire of original tunes and gems from the blues tradition. Brian and the band are serious in their musicianship, but have serious fun when they perform! Without gimmicks, the focus is on delivering a great performance of great tunes that are perfect for both dancing and listening. Band members include some of the finest players in the area: Guitar:Steve Yonck contributes to the Orbiters sound with his superb guitar work. Steve is deeply versed in the blues tradition, and he is an exceptionally fine guitarist. He has previously contributed to several top Northwest bands including the Hudson Blues Band, Kim Field's Titans of Tone, Harmonica Playboy and the Midnight Movers, and earlier performances with the Orbiters. His distinctive style is a superb complement to Brian's slide, harp, and guitar playing. Drums: Russ Kammerer performs with both the Orbiters and the Trio. He's a superb drummer who really drives the groove with energy and finesse. Russ's playing demonstrates incredible versatility, polish, and expertise that comes from many years of professional touring performance. He's a fantastic player!
Bass: Hank Yanda plays bass with both the Orbiters and Trio. Hank also provides superb vocals. He's an amazing player who also has been on the scene for many years, and his experience really shows . He is a truly remarkable musician who really understand the blues.
Brian and the Orbiters have been honored with several "Best of the Blues" nominations by the Washington Blues Society. For 2011, Brian has been nominated for "Best Slide Guitar". In 2010, Brian was nominated for "Best Male Vocalist", and the band was nominated for "Best Blues Act", and "Best Traditional Blues Act". Friday 2/17/12 Seattle Teen Music!  www.seattleteenmusic.com This week we have 3 teen bands and also a band comprised of some of their instructors! A class act! Come on down and check out their prowess on their instruments. They are a little raw, but very exciting and energizing! The club is usually packed on Teen Nights with parents and other relatives, instructors, the curious, and a lot of high energy teens! We are working on sending some of these teens to the Centrum Blues Workshops this coming July, and also looking at sending a teen band to the International Blues Challenge for 2013! The band originally consisted of Don Forsyth, Diane Forsyth and Billy Reed. They rose to fame with their debut international album, Town Hall Brawl (1996). In the following year, they released their second international album, Town Hall Brawl’s Back (1997) and simultaneously in the United States, which continued the group's success worldwide. They rose to superstardom with their album Brawlinneum (1999) and its follow-up album, Black and Blue and Brawled (2000). After a three-year hiatus, the band regrouped and have released their comeback album: Never Gone Brawling for a While (2005), as well as two further albums Unbrawlable (2007) and This is us Brawling (2009). O.K., that's their official band statement, but truly folks, what we're talking about is going back to Roots music...a little blues, a little country, and mix in a dollop of soul and perhaps some R&B and what do you have? Celebrate Ground Hog’s day with "The Bare Roots!!” The Bare Roots were founded in 1965 by five Junior High School friends in Northeast Seattle. We have over 100 years of professional music experience and some real talent of note in the band:
Greg Bloom - Lead Vocals Greg co-founded the band and also sang and recorded with the Northwest band Soul Survivor. Greg enjoyed a long and successful career in the steel industry.
John Hanford - Lead Guitar & Vocals Originally the band’s keyboardist, John switched to lead guitar duties in 1969. Subsequently John has played guitar for The Kathi McDonald Band, Burgundy Express, The Neil Rush Band, and LJ Porter and the Vampin’' Ho’'s. In 2003, John joined The Wailers, pioneering rock ‘n’ roll band from the Northwest. He also leads a double life, combining roles as both performing musician and instructor of classical music history at the University of Washington, School of Music.
Dave Baughn - Bass Dave co-founded the band and has played with several other Northwest bands. He enjoyed a long professional career specializing in corralling new business. Now he spends lots of time trying to herd these other cats.
Steve Peterson - Drums, Vocals & Guitar When he is not pounding the tubs for The Bare Roots, Steve is drummer-in-ordinary for The Daily Flash ("“The French Girl”") as well as The Kingsmen ("“Louie, Louie”"). As songwriter and producer, Steve also owns and operates On the Mound Studios, —host to both regional and national recording artists. Brian Huchison - Guitar, Harp, Keyboards, Vocals & Drums
Brian has been a professional musician since Jr. High School. He has performed and recorded with a number regional and national acts including James Byrd, Roger Filgo, and Clear Logic. Bill has been a professional musician for many years and also plays with The Kathi McDonald Band, Town Hall Brawl, The Jet City Fliers, and Cory P. McDaniel & the Gone Johnson Revue. You've seen this guy [layiong keyboards with multiple bands throughout the area. Plus, he lives in Ballard and is a Salmon Bay Eagles member!

Larry McCann, and George “Jordy”Sigler started the band after a fundraiser for “Ten Thousand Villages”. Larry plays bass, sings and is our primary arranger. He grew up in Chicago and played clubs there with his brothers. One of his childhood friends was a nephew of Willie Dixon and Larry can tell you a story about being in the great man’s studio.
George plays guitar, grew up in Seattle , and attended Garfield High in the same class as Al Wilcox. Al Wilcox, our lead singer & guitarist has been playing funk, mostly as a drummer, singing, in Seattle since the 70’s. He and George first met while attending Garfield High School . We like to play parties and think of bar gigs as parties too. We like to have people sit in, especially on harmonica, horns and vocals.

Thursday 1/19/12 Star Drums & Lady Keys Check the website and get some history on Leslie Milton, who’s one of the elders, and a major player in the NW Blues scene. He's someone you need to know more about, and has some interesting stories. BB Awards given to Leslie Milton: He was voted twice as Best Drums, has won Best Entertainer, is in the WBS Hall of Fame, and he was also voted in as a “Living Legend.” You don’t get that kind of recognition by sitting on your drum stool and twirling drumsticks…well in his case he did, and that’s an indication of just how good he is! I just wonder why he hasn’t won some recognition for his vocals. Les and Gael created a very compatable musical partnership; as Gael know how to determine keys and patterns, and plays by ear as well, and Leslie prefers to play drums and sing by feel to the story of the song. Gael is quite a musical library on her own with her knowledge of the old time greats, which surprised Leslie, as their musical tastes proved to be amazingly similar. They often invite various musicians to join them, so come on down and check out the action, with Les sittin’ behind the drums, and Gael at the keys, you know something good’s gonna be happening! Friday 1/20/12 Teen Music Nite! It's that time of the month again and we have 3 hot bands lined up for tonight. We'll kick off the evening with The Hebephrenics [I love the name!] Then Los Gentlemen will take the stage for the second set, And we'll close out the night with Echo 9. All 3 bands have played the club in the past and I can tell you that this is real entertainment, even if none of the kids are related to you! they are very serious about the music and are excellent musicians. We are starting to get organized to send a teen band or two to the Road To Memphis competition for this coming 2012 event. Finals for the right to represent the WBS will be concluded by August. We will be having some fundraisers to help finance this trip, so much more shall be revealed in the near future. Chris has brought his band to our stage on a regular basis, and for a darned good reason! They are one of the best dance bands in the area. If you have dance shoes collecting dust in your closet, now's the time to dig 'em out and shine them up for a good work out! Chris evokes hot, thick notes out of that big hollow bodied guitar that he plays with such authority. And why not? He's one of the best and well-known guitar teachers in the Pacific NW. Originally from the Midwest, Annie settled in Seattle more than 20 years ago. She's been singing the blues and ballads ever since her coffee house days at Kent State . Her repertoire features straight ahead rockin’ roadhouse blues, to smoldering slow burners and swing tunes. Annie’s vocals combine elements of blues and jazz with a unique sultry, sensitive tone that she can shape to rock the house.
Kimball Conant was born in the city of Wichita, Kansas . He is also a former resident of Paraguay , South America . This long time Seattle musician calls upon a wide variety of influences to take blues and R&B to new places. “The first great guitarist I heard was my brother, Dave,” says Kimball, referring to the late NW Bluesman Dave Conant. “We play a lot alike, but different.” Kimball performs on his vintage Gretsch electric guitar in the distinctive finger style made famous by Chet Atkins and easily shifts to a deep down Jonny Winter style acoustic slide guitar for burning blues.
Larry Hill is a lifetime Seattle resident, and a 3rd generation multi-instrumentalist. He started playing bass in 1967 and has gone on to successfully play many different styles of music with many of the NW’s very best musicians. He has anchored the bass chair with Kimball & the Fugitives and Maia Santell & House Blend for several years.
Phil Bowden has made his living as a full time drummer playing a wide variety of styles including rock, blues, jazz, and big band. In 1997 he began to concentrate on playing the blues. He has played with Dave Conant, David Brewer, Mauva Bell, John Stephan, Maia Santell, Isaac Scott, and has been with Kimball since 2001. Music starts at 8 and goes til midnight All Ages No Cover!

Now for something new! A band that's not been previously featured at the Salmon Bay Eagles! Okay, from the photo, you probably recognized Suze Sims and Terri Wilson from the Red Hot Blues Sisters. In recent years, they have been the Washington Blues Society’s sponsored band to the Road To Memphis blues competition. They have also been nominated and received various awards at the WBS Best Of The Blues Ceremonies. They have participated in a whole lotta festivals, fundraisers, and WBS events, so I know you have seen them around the area. Tonight they will bring a select, smaller group of musicians with them, that will be more intimate and appropriate for the SBE venue than the bigger version of the band that has the whole panoply of horns, a string section, etc. It's a good thing you dusted off those dancing shoes last Thursday! Blue 55, formed in 2000, is named after Glen's - the guitarist- 1955 GMC pickup that originally hauled the band's equipment. The band plays a variety of good time music for all ages and tastes, such as covers of oldies, 50's, 60's, rock & roll, blues, R&B, soul, classic rock, country tunes, and even some originals. All guaranteed to liven up your event and get your booty up and moving. They are a lot of fun! I had made an error in listing this event as happening on Christmas eve...not a good night for partying! Thursday 12/15/11 Eric Madis & Blue Madness Eric Madis - Guitars & Vocals Brad Stoll - Bass Martin Rush - Drums Ron Weinstein - Keys Eric Madis is a guitarist, singer and composer whose playing and compositions reflect a love and mastery of the blues that have been supplemented and refined by years of experience in jazz, country, rock, folk, and Hawaiian music. What results are performances that include authentic renderings of old rural blues, personal interpretations of modern urban blues and jazz standards, and original music that defies strict categorization, but that draws heavily from all of these traditions. Eric lives in Seattle where he leads Blue Madness and the Eric Madis Trio, performs as a solo act and plays in several other Seattle area groups. He released his fifth CD "The Dues Will Never Be Paid in Full" on Luna Records in November 2009. Friday 12/16/11 Seattle Teen Music Night! We are trying something a little different this month by having some adults also perform during the Seattle Teen Music monthly event at the Salmon Bay Eagles. We want to see if we can raise some money in a benefit style (just donations) for our portion of the sound and insurance for next years Seattle Peace Concerts. Last year we had Teen Bands at many of the Spring & Summer Peace Concerts that are held at parks all over the Seattle area. This evening we will have 1 teen band, Gemini Rain, and 3 adult acts (Don Glenn for a few songs, Piper Stock Hill and Hejira). Piper Stock Hill is a cool acoustic band with flutes and Hejira is a world music duo. This is a completely different event than our usual Teen Night and hope that you will attend, support, and contribute to the Teen music education program! On drums is Marty Valedebene, who has been accused of supplying the rhythm to many of the best bands around the area. On the Right [but he's rumored to be a liberal] is the multi-talented trouble -instigating, Rob Moitoza, who'll most likely do a some of his funk-based original material that'll have you alternating between his jaw-dropping bass licks that you've never heard from anyone else, and of laughing at his politically infused and ribald lyrics! She is a familiar figure on the Blues scene. Tonight, Heather will be performing with Beth & Jim Wulff, also known as The WulffTones...that's Jim on drums & vocals and Beth on Keyboards. These folks also have lots of pals in the Blues and Jazz societies and invite various talented people to join them onstage for additional excitement and fun. This is going to be one heck of a good night for music! If nothing else, they are different than most bands you hear at the club, and they are a fun group to dance to! Connie and Allison grew up in Detroit, Michigan during the heyday of Motown. They began singing harmonies together while listening to records and doing the dishes. In recent years they've sung back up vocals for a number of Seattle musicians and were members of the Extractions, a good time classic rock and blues band. Connie plays an assortment of electric and acoustic guitars and sings most of the high parts. Allison lays down funky percussion under her smoky contralto and plays acoustic guitar.
